APRIL 2015: BACK HOME TO MILNEBURG
The Board and management commenced tackling an even greater challenge: relocating all of the women and staff back home to Louisiana. Careful incremental planning and decision making efforts were implemented as a newly created, well-constructed Milne community was designed. Everyone knew this new community needed special attention and design, enabling all residents to stay safely within the confines of their own homes should a level 5 hurricane surface locally.
After several years of planning, including numerous federal, statewide, and local governmental meetings; a groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday, May 9th, 2013. On April 15th, 2015, we commenced moving beloved women and staff back home to greater Covington, Louisiana on a spacious 55 acre parcel that we developed into a unique subdivision we named Milneburg.
OUR NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSES
Our gorgeous community consists of twelve single family homes accommodating four residents per house. Each resident has his or her own bedroom and two roomates share each bathroom. Homes were designed to be an open concept, with vaulted ceilings in the living areas, easy access to kitchen facilities and screened in porches to enjoy. Every home includes a full kitchen, dining room, living room, staff bathroom, a laundry room, and a family room for all to freely enjoy.
Homes exceed all handicap accessible requirements. As residents, guests, and staff exit each home, there are numerous walkways interspersed among the courtyard to other homes or to the Community Center.
MILNEBURG COMMUNITY AMENITIES
Our larger community includes a community center, green spaces, walkways, outdoor pavilion, administrative and nursing buildings, and a cafe that is open to the public.
The community center offers a space for community members to meet, learn, and participate in recreational and social activities. Our Café Milne is open to the public and employs residents in the Milne Work Opportunity Program. The Sue Beeler Memorial Pavilion provides outdoor space for picnics, barbques, concerts and dances.
Our community has been designed to be self-contained, including the following services: semi-private electrical services incorporated with power plant and generators, sewage and waste water treatment, and drinkable well water for the community. This investment in infrastructure is meant to ensure that the residents of Milneburg will not need to evacuate in case of a natural disaster like Katrina.
